Well…..been busy so I couldn’t post yet about this travesty of justice. Mary Winkler has basically gotten away with murder.

Some random thoughts about this:

First thought: I read somewhere (People magazine, perhaps) that of the 10 women jurors, 5 of them wanted Mary to get off completely. Acquittal. For murdering her husband. My thoughts on this: she shot her freaking husband in the back! Abuse is not justification for shooting someone in the back. That many women buying into the “abuse as justification for murder” crap really makes me wonder if a woman should ever be President.

Next thought: Tell me why the justice system is so screwed up. What makes it ok for a woman to serve hardly any time for murdering her husband while sewage treatment plant employees get almost 3 years in federal prison for falsifying reports?

Are we putting the environment above human life now? If we’re going to do that, we may as well annihilate the human race. We put out carbon dioxide every day!

farese.jpgWell, the prosecution rested yesterday and now it’s the defense’s turn. I found out the attorney I mentioned in my previous post is Steve Farese, not Ferese. And his brother, Tony, was cross-examining yesterday and was an even bigger, ruder, more pompous and arrogant jackass than his brother, which I had previously assumed impossible.

I find it hard to believe the prosecution didn’t object more to the witness badgering the defense was guilty of. Of course, the judge seemed bored, as if he’d rather be golfing or something, so it may not have done any good.

I think maybe the prosecution just realizes the defense is just hurting themselves by acting like fools and berating these witnesses for no reason. My understanding is that one of the Farese brothers was asking Diane Winkler who told her some fact or statement that he apparently found outrageous or incredible…..turns out it was himself! Moron

I can’t even really watch the trial anymore because of the Farese brothers….who will now be referred to as the Saleze brothers (as in sleaze…..sleazy jerks). How does someone like that sleep at night?

Although I missed the recap of the first day’s coverage of the trial, I’ve been watching the rest of the trial, and I must say that defense attorney, Steve Ferese I think, is one heck of an arrogant, presumptous, rude prick. What a stereotypically slimy attorney.

I was so glad when that TBI firearms expert didn’t let Ferese get him twisted in his own words. And that demonstration he wanted the expert to do….letting the gun barrel fall towards the ground to “prove” that it would discharge…..was a dumb move and did nothing to help the defense.

The defense team’s whole demeanor, to me, is doing nothing but hurting them with the jury. They are both somewhat rude and arrogant, and I don’t really think the jury is appreciating their manner.

What really ticked me off, and would have ticked me off more if I had seen it instead of hearing about it second hand, was the defense attacking Dan Winkler on day one of the trial. As I have mentioned in an earlier Winkler-trial post, Dan was preacher at Crieve Hall Church of Christ the first few years we were there, and he was definitely one of those people you look at and try to model your life after. I don’t believe I have ever met a more genuinely nice and caring individual. What you saw was what you got and he was just an honest and straightforward person.

I’ll have to watch the recap tonight on TV to see what happens today. I pretty much watched it all live Saturday, but it was pretty boring, what with most of it being bankers testifying about the bank accounts. Same questions, over and over, asked 600 different ways.

My early prediction: guilty of 2nd-degree murder

Don ImusEver since Imus made his comment about the Rutger’s women’s basketball team, people have been saying it was racist. Even people who don’t believe he should be fired say, “Well, it’s offensive but he shouldn’t be fired.” No one is telling the truth, which is it was not a racist remark.

(Here’s a great, truthful piece on this from another blogger)

Racism and racist are two words thrown around all the time by people who think they know what it means but really have no idea. To help you out, here are definitions according to dictionary.reference.com:

racist

adjective
1. based on racial intolerance; “racist remarks”
2. discriminatory especially on the basis of race or religion

noun
1. a person with a prejudiced belief that one race is superior to others

So Imus called a team of women, black and white, nappy headed ho’s. An offensive remark? I suppose so, if you choose to take offense at it instead of ignoring it. A racist remark? Is this a remark based on racial intolerance? Nobody but Imus knows, but talking about someone’s hair being nappy does not mean you are attacking their race. My wife, who is white, now and then says her hair is nappy. Racist? No.

Nappy is defined as:

Nappy–adjective, -pi·er, -pi·est. 1. covered with nap; downy.
2. (of hair) kinky.

So if you tell someone their hair is downy or kinky, you’re a racist? How are people making these incredible leaps?

Are you telling me Imus was only referring to the black players on that mixed race team? He referred to the team as a whole. If nappy means downy or kinky, in reference to hair, and black people are offended, does that mean only black people have nappy hair and they are so unhappy with themselves that they get offended when people point out their hair?

If that’s the case, you better never tell me I have thin straight hair. I’ll call for your termination!

I just posted a rant about racial hypocrisy that I wrote as a result of the Don Imus “nappy-headed ho’s” brouhaha, and a gentleman by the name of James C. Collier commented on it. The comment was exceptional and thought-provoking, so I looked to see if he had a blog.

He does indeed, and it is located at http://www.actingwhite.com. I strongly encourage you to check it out. From what I have read so far, Mr. Collier takes an objective, logical look at issues of race and other differences, and his posts make for very interesting reads.
